| Following on from
very successful events in England and France during 2003, we were
very pleased to be able to organise and run a week of training workshops
in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
This event proved to be very popular, attracting
over 140 participants over the 4 training days. The first 3 days
of training were dedicated to UN agencies, and the final day was
taken up by key international NGOs.
This was the first time that TGS had organised
such a training event in Africa so we were able to learn a great
deal from the trainees about the driving conditions which they experience
on a day to day basis as well as gaining invaluable feedback from
them on matters such as vehicle maintenance, fleet management and
accessories requirements among others.
We hope we were also able to pass on some of
our expertise. Each seminar lasted 1 day and involved detailed instruction
in the following key practical areas:
Vehicle familiarisation and basic maintenance
Vehicle recovery techniques
Use of key accessories
4x4 driving techniques
6 TGS team members attended the event.
We were very fortunate to be able to count on the assistance of
the GTZ workshops near Freetown which allowed us to use its compound
for the training workshops and offered a great deal of practical
and logistical support to the event.
Thanks must also go to UNHCR and WFP who
allowed us to use their vehicles - as well as UNICEF, UNDP and UNFPA
who brought their vehicles to the event - without such cooperation
this event would not have been possible.
