AMBULANCE WORKSHOP - OUR WORKSHOP MANAGER EXPLAINS.
The TGS Ambulance workshop is probably one of our busiest workshops at the moment. Ambulance requests are becoming increasingly popular with clients and TGS works very hard to supply these ambulances as quickly as possible.

Our purpose-built Ambulance Workshop allows us to produce high quality conversions on two of our models: the Land Cruiser Hardtop and the Hiace Commuter Bus. Our wide range of ambulance accessories caters for a wide range of customer requirements.

We asked our Workshop Manager, Gary Summers, to explain the work carried out by our Ambulance workshop:

1) How long has the TGS Ambulance workshop been up and running?
TGS ambulance workshops have been in business since 1995 where the bulk of the vehicles were produced by a sub-contractor but by 1996 our own in house set up was inaugurated.

2) Can you give us a brief description of the main types of ambulances you prepare?

TGS uses two main vehicle models for its ambulance conversions the Land Cruiser 78 and the Hiace bus. The Land Cruiser 78 is mainly used in areas where they need four wheel drive availability and heavy duty usage. The Hiace is popular in built up areas and where good roads are available.
On the Land Cruiser 78 we can offer three specifications of Ambulance from Low through medium and to our high spec vehicle:

- Low Spec will often just be fitted with a secure floor, attendant seat and a basic stretcher plus a flashing beacon.

- On the Medium range we will have the floor option along with the wipe clean interior plastic with a division plus tinted windows a roof extractor roof mounted warning lamp/beacon and interior lamps

This model will invariably have a more sophisticated stretcher unit.

- When it comes to the high spec ambulance this will along with all the items listed on the mid range unit have a fixed storage cabinet, piped oxygen system PA system and normally a high level of medical equipment as requested by the client.
The Hiace is normally only prepared in one specification but there is always the capability to remove or add some of the more sophisticated types of Medical equipment.

3) How do the Hiace and Hardtop conversions compare?
The 78 obviously has the advantage that it can be used off road but does not have as much head room as the Hiace. Also being wider means that more equipment can be fitted to the Hiace making it a much more practical unit.

4) Which extra accessories do you feel are essential when purchasing a 4x4 ambulance ?
Dependant on the terrain and location of the 4WD Ambulance will determine the type of extra equipment required.

For really arduous conditions then a winch/bull-bar combination can be useful to cover from a difficult situation just as communications equipment may be of more use in order to contact other vehicles to obtain assistance.

Almost all the general equipment for security and operational ability which is fitted to our normal 4WD vehicles can be fitted to our range of Ambulances.

5) What advice would you give a customer with regards to what they should be looking for in an ambulance?
Best thing is to speak first with the doctors who will be operating the vehicle, find out about the vehicles destination and make a selection of options from there.

Then they should talk to the sales staff in TGS who will advise any further options.

As you know all ambulance quotes should be passed through the Ambulance management to peruse the chosen specification. This avoids vehicles arriving at the end destination with key options not fitted.

6) How many Ambulances do you prepare (on average) per year ?
Last few years we have been doing around 125 units per year but it looks as though we shall do nearer to 160 this financial year.
