Sponsorship Student Returns to TGS

Carol Posso - Sponsorship graduate returns to TGS

For the past few years TGS has offered, 2 local students, currently studying in Gibraltar with a view to attend University, the opportunity to join our annual Graduate Sponsorship Scheme.

On occasion, TGS goes on to offer full-time employment to such students upon graduation from university. Carol Posso first joined the company’s IT Department under the Sponsorship Scheme two years ago as part of the “Work Placement” module of her degree. She is now a fully fledged member of the IT team and this is what she has to say about her experience so far with TGS

How did you first hear about the Student Sponsorship Scheme?
I heard about the Sponsorship scheme during my final year at College. I did not think I had a much chance of getting it.

What were your first experiences of the company?
My first experience of the company was that it was very attentive and considerate about the wellbeing of their employees. TGS aim to achieve their mission statements by concentrating on their employees’ skills set, as well as customer behaviour by providing ongoing training for employees.

Did you benefit a lot from working in the company for a year, if so, in what way?
Working in an office allowed me to experience real working life: how to deal with clients and fellow colleagues. It allowed me to apply the organisational and professional skills, acquired during my time at TGS, in my final year at university.

What were the key elements you learnt from working in an office environment related to your field of study?
During my year’s placement, I learnt a lot about the type of work I was doing: lots of IT technical logic which you can only achieve hands on.

Did you immediately know this was the place where you wanted to work?
Prior to my placement at TGS, my organisational skills were "dormant". Once I returned to university I noticed a difference in the way I prioritised and arranged my time around work. This might have also been a result of the huge workload I had, but my motivation and organisation towards work had certainly improved.

What advice would you give to students joining the scheme?
The only advice I would give students is to take advantage of the opportunity they are given to work with a company during the summer. Work hard and set aside the student mentality!
